Tackett is a registered professional engineer and worked for Virginia Power for twelve years in the areas of protective relaying, distribution planning and operations, marketing and transmission operations.

In 1998, Tackett founded and became President of Tackett Electric Company, a utility consulting firm. He provides engineering and technical consulting services to clients representing every segment of the electric utility industry.

He also offers reliability analysis services to utilities and has presented various technical papers regarding distribution reliability.
